Dies hier ist ein C123, dem die zuckersüßen Erinnerungen an die sagenhaften 70er aus jedem Karosseriespalt strömen. Das legendäre ELO Album „Out of the blue“ im rechten, den unaufgeregt um gemäßigt sportliche Fahrweise bittenden M115 Motor im linken Ohr. So schmeckt das Leben nach wirklich echter Qualität. Der im Drehzahlkeller um Kilometer bettelnde, frühe Vierzylinder der W123 Baukastens, ist obenrum stets bemüht. Dafür gilt dieser Motor aber auch als fast unzerstörbar und läuft, wie ein Schweizer Uhrwerk.
Andere Liga
Subjektiv spielen die Erstseriencoupés irgendwie in einer anderen Liga. Nicht von dieser Welt. Zeitlos, unantastbar, enorm präsent. Liegt es an Motor, Farbe, Polstern, Armaturenbrett, Hölzern oder Teppichen? Vielleicht auch nur an eigenen Erinnerungen. Als Kind sah man so ein Auto nie am Straßenrand geparkt. Weil es sorgfältig garagiert wurde. Vor allem, um seinen Wert zu erhalten. Der Kaufpreis von 30.000 Mark aufwärts für einen Mercedes C123 entsprach damals in Deutschland immerhin ziemlich genau dem Gegenwert einer kleinen Eigentumswohnung.

Auffallen tut er schon der Farbe wegen genug, Zeitgeist verpflichtet, mutig, selten: 406 Cayenne Orange. Während ich mir daneben eine moorbraune W123 Limousine und einen S123 Kombi in agavengrün vorstelle, sitze ich auf einem Sofa in genau dieser trendigen Farbkomposition. Es ist 1978. Und schon wieder ELO. Jeff Lynne tönt aus den 40 Watt Lautsprechern der Schneider Anlage, als kenne er sich ganz gut mit Sternen aus. Ich fühle mich sehr leicht. Und dankbar. Weil ich diese Zeit erleben durfte. Denke, ich brauch` bald mal wieder einen Mercedes Benz in 406 Cayenne Orange…
